8 November, 1927: Patti Page was the Madonna of her time, selling over 100 million records. "The Tennessee Waltz" was her biggest hit, being number one in the charts for 13 weeks in 1950. Jerry Springer picked the song last week as one of his Desert Island Discs.

9 November, 1959: Thomas Quasthoff, 50 this week, has forged a major reputation as a classical singer but he also has a jazzy side as seen here in an improvisation with Bobby McFerrin, who is still trying to live down "Don't worry, be happy" at a jazz festival in Vienna in 1980.

10 November, 1941: Kyu Sakamoto's most popular song, "Ue o muite arukō" ("I look up when I walk") was popular in Japan and the United States. Released by Capitol Records in the US as "Sukiyaki", it topped the Billboard pop charts in the United States for three weeks in 1963 - to date the only song sung entirely in Japanese to do so.
