The National Youth Jazz Orchestra seeks to appoint a part-time Music and Artistic Director with effect from 1st September 2012.  The appointment will be for 2 years with the possibility of extending the contract annually up to a maximum of five years.  This is a 0.4 position.  Annual salary = 0.4 x £39,000 = £15,600 plus performance fees.

NYJO is different from many youth orchestras in that it treats its musicians as professionals.  For the majority of gigs, the musicians are paid. NYJO has a broad repertoire with a wide range of musical styles including big band, jazz orchestra, classic songs, and jazz suites.  This range serves to please promoters with their different audiences and marketplaces.  However, it also prepares NYJO musicians for the real world of earning a living as a jazz musician.

This role in NYJO has four essential elements: Artistic Direction, Music Direction, Educator and, not least, being the Band Leader.
